Agios Nikolaos

Capital of the Prefecture Lassithi

The name derives from the patron saint of seamen, St Nicholas. The city was built on the foundations of the ancient city of Lato pros Kamara. Ayios Nikolaos has developed into a flourishing tourist centre. A lake, connected to the sea by a canal, constitutes the attractive main meeting-place in the city. Surrounded by red rocky cliffs and trees, it draws many visitors. Tavernas und cafés there invite you to stop for a while. Cultural events are held on a stage for the inhabitants and visitors. The city extends via narrow passageways over the crest of a hill, and this is what makes the position of Ayios Nikolaos so unique. The shops offer everything the heart desires. Countless entertainment possibilities – bars, discos, cinemas, as well as both Greek and international restaurants, cater for all tastes. Sporting activities are also available – football, basketball, volleyball, tennis and beach volleyball are all offered for participation. The range of activities on offer is completed by a swimming pool and minigolf.
