Prefecture of Chania

A typical large village

on the north coast opposite the Akrotiri Peninsula, which has undergone considerable development in recent years due to tourism. Numerous restaurants, hotels und cafés have established themselves there. Holidaymakers will find all that they need – post office, banks, doctors, and chemists. Kalyves has fine beaches and it is a good point of departure for the exploration of Apokoronas and the whole of the west of Crete.

One disadvantage is the traffic situation in the village. The main road is too narrow and the situation is made worse by the parking habits of the Greeks.  This leads to daily traffic jams in the village, in which a line of cars moves with painful slowness. As there is no pavement, walking or sightseeing always means ‘doing battle with the traffic’. The council should make improvements, as a matter of urgency.
