Sitia

The city is the gateway to Minoan Crete.

This is where ZEUS brought beautiful Europa ashore. Sitia, identified with ancient ITIA,was a Venetian settlement rebuilt by the Turks around 1870. The city extends amphitheatre-like from the sea up a hill, which is crowned by the Byzantine/Venetian fortress of Kazarma. SITIA is an ideal place to spend relaxing, interesting holidays. Of course, it no longer constitutes an insider tip, but it is by no means overrun. You will find wonderful sandy beaches, olive groves, gorges and hidden treasures in the surrounding area. Sitia is famous for good wine, good fruit, and superb olive oil.
