Hersonissos

The holiday hot-spot

The village is the tourist centre of the north coast with everything the holidaymaker requires - fine beaches, sizzling nightlife, and high life around the clock. Those seeking peace and the typical Crete should avoid it!
Ancient Hersonissos, on the same site, was an important and independent settlement, especially during the Roman and Byzantine periods. The Agricultural Museum in Piskopiano contains a working olive mill dating from the beginning of the last century. The Lychnostasis Museum contains examples of Cretan architecture such as houses, olive mills, windmills and a threshing floor. Handicrafts such as weaving and pottery are demonstrated. Only a few kilometres into the mountains, the simple Cretan country life reveals itself in its finest aspect.
