Prefecture of Rethymnon

An old settlement, south-east of Rethymnon

Situated in the western foothills of Mount Psiloritis. The village is famous for the production of earthenware, pottery and large clay vessels and vases - pithoi - which are sometimes still fired in earth pits. A number of young artisans have settled in Margarites today. A stroll through the workshops is always worthwhile. There are churches worth a visit in the village and nearby, in Apo Tripodo, there is a thousand-year-old olive tree.
