Prefecture of Lasithi

11 km south-west of Ayios Nikolaos.

The village became famous after the film director Jules Dassin filmed the novel Christ Recrucified by Nikos Kazantzakis there. It is a large mountain village with more than 2,000 inhabitants. Away from the main streets with their souvenir shops, it has retained its original character well. Today, the village is known for its weaving and lace-making, its olive oil and the old chapel of Panayia Kera, with wall-paintings dating from the 13th to 15th centuries.
