The Prefectures of Crete

Crete is one of 13 administrative regions of Greece. It is divided into four prefectures (from west to east): Chania, Rethymnon, Heraklion and Lasithi. These are subsequently subdivided into 68 municipalities.
Half of the Cretan population of just over 600,000 inhabitants prefers to live in the large cities, which today offer the essential employment possibilities.
