By car

A0) Apokoronas

From Georgioupolis to the Lake of  Kournas. Further on to Kournas ( Höhle ). Through Episkopi to Argyroupolis  with the springs. There you can do some lovely walks ( see Rethymnon >Walking).

A1)  Akrotiri:

Make a round trip of the Akrotiri Peninsula, visiting the three monasteries Arkadi, Gouverneto and Katholiko (Katholiko Monastery is reached on foot) and the numerous little beaches of the region. On the way there from Chania you can visit the tomb of VENIZELOS, the British War Cemetery in Souda, and discover the little island in the Bay of Souda on a boat trip.


A2)  White Mountains 1

 From Georgioupolis to Lake Kournas, then along the old National Road to  Argyroupolis and from there via Kallikratos through the White Mountains to Imbros, and from Vryses back along the National Road. An impressive tour, for you to experience the mountainous Cretan landscape at close quarters. You can also get to know Greek food in all of these places. Take your time, and make a point of getting out of your car occasionally.

A2a) White Mountains 2

From Argyroupolis the inique road through Giparis gorge leads You to Asi Gonia. Next stop is the nearly deserted village  Kallikratos . We follow the narrow winding road down to  Frangokastello. We return to the north from Chora Sfakion  to Vrysses, where you take the National Road either to Rethymnon or to Chania.

A3) White Mountains 3

Leave the National Road at Aptera/Kalami, follow the road to Kalyves and before the village turn right to Stylos, from there follow the road to Provarma, the road ascends to Samonas, offering a real breathtaking view to the villages of Apokoronas and the sea!In this Village you find a beautiful taverna and the cave of Samonas. On ourway we pass the chuch of Agios Nikolaos and Kiriakoselia, Ramni with a cheese factory, Pemonia, Fres and Neo Chorio.

A4) Western  Crete 1

 We start in Kissamos and follow the road to Sfinari. We continue   to  the Nunnery of Chrysokalitissa and further on to Elafonisi. Then proceed to Palaeochora and return via Kandanos  to the north coast. You will find good tavernas in Kissamos und Sfinari (Business Directory), and good beaches at Palaeochora.

A5) Western Crete 2

Follow the national Road to Tavronitis. There you leave and drive to Voukolies. Continue to Fotakado. the vegetation changes from vast olivegroves into a natural unique landscape. Pass the village and go to Paleia Roumata, a village with living traditions and a beautiful surrounding. In this area you can do short or longer hikes ( e.g. Vadouledo Gorge ). Continue to Ano Kefala and return to Voukolies. Turn right to Neo Chorio and further on to Sirilli. the route ends up at the historical airport in Maleme.

A6) Cultural tour

Galatas - Daratsos - Ayia Marina - Ayia Lake - Drakiana. Only a few kilometres away from the tourist resorts to the west of Chania you will find the original, real Crete with its orange and olive groves, vineyards and picturesque villages. Enjoy the natural landscape with walks on the surrounding hills, and discover Cretan food away from the tourist haunts. 
Tip: Take a stroll around the Ayia Lake and stop for coffee in one of the tavernas by the lake itself.


Walking


W1)   European trail E4

 Kissamos, west coast to Palaeochora, along the south coast via Souyia, Loutro to Chora Sfakion.  Only for experienced walkers.

a) > Kissamos - Sfinari,2,5 km, > Sfinari - Chrissoskalitissa, 32 km, > Chrissokalitissa - Paleochora, 22 km, > Paleochora - Sougia 14,5 km, > Sougia - Agia Roumeli 20 km, > Agia Roumeli - Loutro, 13 km, > Loutro - Fragokastello, 19,5 km

b). > Sougia - Koustoyerako - Omalos, 24,5 km, > Omalos - Samaria - Agia Roumeli18 km


W2)   Apokoronas

From Almyrida to Douliana, then on to Vamos and back via Gavalochori. Or further on, to Kefalas, and back via Drapanos.


W3)  Kissamos

From Kissamos over the Gramvoussa Peninsula to Balos, where you can swim in the beautiful bay. For the lazier individual: Take the boat excursion from the harbour of Kissamos  to Balos, visit Gramvoussa island with its old fortress, swim in the bay, and walk back from there.

 

W4) Kissamos region

Sassalos - Makronas, 3-4 hours, not difficult. Approach via Kolymbari, Spilia (Cave of St. John), Episkopi (once the seat of a bishop), Astrikas, Deliana, and then Sassalos. Visit the old windmill and try a tsikoudia in the café. Descend into the valley and follow the stream-bed. Nature is untouched here, and your efforts will be rewarded. Walk to Voulgaro or up to the villages on the rim of the gorge.                                           
TIP: Those who do not want such a long walk can simply go through the gorge from Malathiros to Mouri (see Gorges).


W5)  Palaeochora - Souyia 

An easy walk, part of the E4, duration around 6 hours.
The way begins on the road east of the village and runs along beside the sea. Passing the beach at Yialiskari and after a walk of around 2 1/2 hours, it proceeds without difficulty up a hill. Beautiful view over the region. The route then continues to the Bay of Lissos. Here, we find an ancient Sanctuary of Asklepios with a mosaic dating from the 3rd century BC. Nearby is the church of St. Kyriakos, its walls decorated with frescoes. There is another church near the beach of Lissos. Follow the path from the ancient sanctuary eastwards; you will reach the beach at Souyia via a narrow gorge. This is a very quiet spot, offering accommodation and tavernas. There is a bus connection to Chania. 


Biking


F1)  White Mountains

From Vryses through the White Mountains to Chora Sfakion on the south coast. This is a trip for hardy mountain-bikers. The descent to the coast is spectacular. At present ,2011, the road is completely new. This trip is therefore  to be recommended .
