Touring in the Prefecture of Rethymnon

By car

A1) Rethymnon - Chromonastiri

Follow the signposts to Roussospiti. Drive to Ayia Irini with the nunnery of the same name, famous for the nuns embroidery, and then further on to Roussospiti. Visit the village and then go on to the MYLI VALLEY. Visit the old village of Myli and the valley with its unique flora. With its stream of running water, it is especially beautiful in springtime. You could even bathe in the torrent.  The road continues on to Chromonastiri, with its ruined churches of the Virgin Mary and St. Eftichios. The former summer residence of the Venetian CLODIO family houses a museum there today.

A2) Rethymnon - Prasies

Follow the Spili road as far as Armeni (<10 km), famous for its Late Minoan cemetery. Turn left a few kilometres further on to Kares, and you will find yourself in an alpine landscape again. The agricultural settlements of Oros, Goulediana and Ambelaki exude the original atmosphere of Cretan country life. You will be surprised at the variety of flowers, fruit and vegetables grown there. On clear days, the peak of Mount Vrysinas is sharply delineated against the blue sky on the one hand, and on the other there is the verdant green of the Amari Valley. Follow the road to Selli and visit the church of Ayios Ioannis, where frescoes date back to the 15th century. On the way to Prasies, enjoy the view of the bridge over the Prasies river and visit the church of Panayia Myrtiou. The village lies on the gorge of the same name, which is worth walking.
